As ECA continues to explore ways to share youth football best practice across the continent, Feyenoord Academy stands out as a key example of youth development done right. Known for its ability to consistently produce top-level talent, the academy of the fourteen-time Eredivisie Champions will offer invaluable lessons to participants during the upcoming ECA Academy Visit between 28-29 October.

Feyenoord Academy’s approach goes beyond just technical training. With a focus on holistic development, the academy focuses on physical fitness and mental resilience, coupled with personalised coaching.

Each player at Feyenoord benefits from individualised development plans tailored to their strengths and needs, helping them evolve not only as footballers but as independent thinkers who thrive in high-pressure situations. This focus on mental toughness and adaptability is crucial in preparing players for the rigors of top-level football.

Participants will be able to get valuable hands-on experience with sessions lead by Feyenoord staff at the Varkenoord Academy and De Kuip Stadion. The first day will have an emphasis on football methodology at the club’s custom-built academy. The second day will take a closer look at the performance methodology of the Dutch side.

Perhaps the most impressive element to the academy system at Feyenoord is the commitment to integrating youth players into the first team. With a goal of ensuring that half the squad is homegrown, Feyenoord focuses on internal development, offering a financially sustainable model for the club to develop.

Currently, Feyenoord have five academy graduates in their first team squad and this approach is a source of pride both for the academy and supporters. Whilst current Netherlands internationals Georginio Wijnaldum, Jurrian Timber Stefan de Vrij and Marten de Roon are all successful graduates from the academy.

After developing a successful pipeline of talent, Feyenoord serves as an ideal location for the first ECA Academy visit of the season. The two-day gathering promises to inspire plenty of engaging discussions, blended with on-the-ground experience for ECA Member Clubs.
