ECA recognises and welcomes the European Parliament's adoption today of a report on the European Dimension in Sport. This report is in response to the European Commission's Communication on Sport adopted back in January 2011 which outlines the sport policy the EU wishes to pursue in the coming months and years.
Throughout 2011, ECA has been liaising closely both with Santiago Fisas the report's author and numerous other MEPs with a known interest in Sport in order to present the views of the clubs on the very many issues the report deals with with a direct impact on football. ECA wishes to put on record that relations with MEPs have been constructive and we are happy to see that many of these understand and support the views we have expressed.
In particular, ECA wishes to highlight the demands expressed by the Parliament in relation to Governance calling for the appropriate representation of all stakeholders in the decsion-making process within a system complicit with the principles of transparency, accountability and democracy. This, we believe is fundamental to the continued growth and well-being of football.
The European Parliament's demands that recognition shall be given to the contribution of clubs to the success of major national team tournaments, in exchange for clubs making their players available when selected by their national teams, is also warmly welcomed by ECA.
ECA takes its relations with the EU seriously and will continue to liaise with and work alongside civil servants and politicians with the aim of further developing and strengthening professional football throughout Europe.
