On the occasion of the UEFA Champions League match between Olympiacos FC and Arsenal FC, the European Club Association (ECA) presented a symbolic cheque of EUR 1.3 million to Save the Children and UNICEF. This concludes ECA's successful "90 MINUTES FOR HOPE" initiative. The amount will be shared evenly between both organisations.
Launched at the beginning of September, the "90 MINUTES FOR HOPE" campaign invited the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League Group Stage participants to donate EUR 1 for every ticket sold at their first European home match in support of the current refugee crisis in Europe. The European clubs have raised the significant amount of EUR 1.3 million, which will benefit Save the Children and UNICEF in their efforts to assist child refugees across Europe in these difficult times.
The cheque handover took place at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus in the presence of senior officials from ECA, Arsenal FC, Olympiacos FC, Save the Children and UNICEF.
Michele Centenaro (ECA General Secretary), Ivan Gazidis (ECA Executive Board Member and CEO of Arsenal FC) and Theodore Giannikos (ECA Executive Board Member and Vice-President of Olympiacos FC) presented the cheque on behalf of ECA and all participating clubs to Ömer Güven (CEO Save the Children Switzerland) and Ilias Liberis (Executive Director of Hellenic National Committee for UNICEF) representing Save the Children and UNICEF respectively.
